Eyeglasses/Contact Lens

SHLC collects eyeglasses and unused contact lens for distribution and repurposes them for individuals locally and internationally.

Kids Eyesight Testing

SHLC members are trained caring people able to easily and efficiently screen the vision health of our nation’s youngest, dearest, and most vulnerable children to help ensure they receive early academic and social development success that we all deserve — guided by the fact that 80% of a child’s learning and development requires healthy, corrected vision.

School and Youth Volunteerism

SHLC is concerned about the physical and mental health of students and kids in our community.
SHLC supports Susie Q’s Kids comfort bag program that engages “Kids in Helping Kids” and embraces the power of positivity and “It’s OK not to be OK”.
They were awarded Community Partner of the Year by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) working with kids to promote hope/healing.
Through their program, kids become involved in philanthropic discussions, actions, and (1) select the nonprofit they wish to support (hospitals, hospice, shelters, foster care, advocacy centers, autism centers, school and youth groups, and grief centers). They learn about those organizations, the impact on the kids that receive the items, and volunteer opportunities.
At the end of the day, they inspire hope, healing, and comfort in the kids who receive the bags.

Bag Stuffing Volunteerism

SHLC supports Susie Q’s Kids by providing their hall on the Second Monday of each month at 6 pm for an open volunteer night to create the comfort bags.
Through this program, they are able to supplement the missions of other nonprofits in the community and the kids in the program that are in need.
The bags contain activity, hygiene, sensory, and grief items, panda bears, blankets (bought and homemade), and Bombas socks through their generous buy one/gift one program.

Bag Stuffing Donations

This is our youngest Lions Cub in attendance at the Lions of Michigan State Conference enjoying the therapy of positive reflections in her coloring.
SHLC collects coloring books, sticker books, crayons, and colored pencils to support the bag stuffing program.
Donations can be brought to the comfort bag stuffing events, placed in the deck box outside of the front door, or the donation box within the hall.

United Way

At United Way, “we work to advance equitable communities where households are stable and children thrive.”

We believe in collaborating in our community to reach the most people and the people with the most need.
We are listed on 211 and do our best to help or offer guidance to other resource partners in our network.

Collaboration

SHLC held their first Collaboration Event in late March this year. It was a resounding success, we had numerous service organizations (Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimists…), different Chambers and nonprofit support orgranizations (Share Detroit, Impact 100, funders), churches, non-profits, and individuals embracing collaboration efforts.

It had a speed dating format enabling people to mingle, share their mission, their need, and how they can augment each other’s offerings.
The energy in the room was enlightening, stay tuned as SHLC leadership is committed to holding events to learn and share what areas we support and how we can work with others to maximize our stance in the community to fulfill the needs of our society.

Panera Bread

Lions Basil and Judy Welsh are our Panera Ambassadors. They pick up the End of Day Dough-Nation, individually bag the products, and serve them to senior sin their complex to augment their food pantry and limited funding..

The seniors are extremely thankful for the contributions and praise Panera Bread and the Sterling Heights Lions Club for their generous contribution and time involved to make this opportunity possible.
As a result of this program, it also increased their coffee time together, attendance is up and more people are staying to eat lunch together instead of their rooms. Smile abounds.
